Travels and adventures

Because that’s how it felt – I just passed through Thailand, without really seeing that much,  in the three days and nights that I’ve been there.

Perhaps, it’s also partly my fault. When our editor-in-chief told me I would be coming with her to Pattaya to cover ADFEST 2012, I conditioned my psyche that I’d be there not as a tourist/traveler but as a media personnel.

I thought, it’s my first time overseas and I HAVE TO WORK. But then, like the little kid at heart I was, I consoled myself that I’d be able to finally ride an airplane (yes, I’m a little shallow that way). Then, there’s also the fact that I’d be traveling to another country, which is one goal off my 2012 list.

This is right before you enter Walking Street, Pattaya's red light district. Then again, my father says Thailand is an entire red light district by itself.

When my boyfriend asked me if I would like to join him and a few office mates and friends to an “alay lakad” (literally “offering a walk”) to Antipolo this year on Maundy Thursday, I was more than a little apprehensive. First, because I would practically be the only girl walking, as per my estimates, 60 kilometers of uphill-downhill roads, in the company of men who have been doing the same trek for years, and second, because… well, I am a girl, barely past the five-foot mark and pushing only a little over a hundred pounds, with a short stride and almost no history of any physical or athletic activity. “I am not a very touristy person. I’m not adventurous in trying new food. I’m not fond of taking pictures, and even if I do end up taking some, I could guarantee that 80 percent of them would literally suck. I’m especially not fond of uncomfortably long rides and always end up twisting around in my seat, trying to find a comfortable position to sleep in to pass the time until we get to our destination.”
